The Membership of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (MRCEM) exam is designed for doctors who want to specialize in Emergency Medicine. The exam primarily aims to assess the candidate’s knowledge and competence in emergency medicine and to ensure that they have the skills required to work as an emergency medicine consultant.
How many parts are there for the exam?
The MRCEM exam is structured into three parts: MRCEM Primary, MRCEM Intermediate, and MRCEM OSCE.
MRCEM Primary
This written examination is designed to assess a candidate’s knowledge in emergency medicine. The MRCEM Primary consists of two sections: multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and extended matching questions (EMQs). The MCQs are designed to test a candidate’s ability to recall and apply their knowledge of emergency medicine to real-life situations. The EMQs are designed to assess a candidate’s ability to apply their knowledge of emergency medicine to real-life scenarios.
MRCEM Intermediate
MRCEM Intermediate is also a written examination designed to assess a candidate’s knowledge of emergency medicine at a higher level. The MRCEM Intermediate SBA consists of two sections: multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and extended matching questions (EMQs). The MCQs are designed to test a candidate’s ability to recall and apply their knowledge of emergency medicine to real-life situations. The EMQs are designed to assess a candidate’s ability to apply their knowledge of emergency medicine to real-life scenarios.
MRCEM OSCE
MRCEM OSCE is an objective structured clinical examination that assesses a candidate’s practical skills and competence in Emergency medicine. The exam involves a series of stations, each testing a candidate’s ability to diagnose and manage patients in emergency medical situations. The exam is typically conducted in a clinical environment, such as a hospital or simulation center, and lasts 4 hours.
The MRCEM is considered one of the leading qualifications in emergency medicine and is recognized by the General Medical Council (GMC) in the United Kingdom. All three components, Primary, Intermediate, and OSCE must be passed for a candidate to be awarded the MRCEM qualification.
